Benefits for employers:

Improving Higher Education in the Greater Manchester area

I am writing to you to request your participation in a worthwhile research project for the construction industry in the Greater Manchester area. I appreciate that time is precious for everyone in these testing times. However, your participation will make a significant contribution to the project. My only request is for you to complete the simple questionnaire attached.

Overview of project aims:

  • Many companies have job specific training requirements for their employees, which do not sit within existing Higher Education course structures. It is acceptable to say that not all modules taught on degree courses are relevant to employer needs. One of the aims of this project sets out to identify whether the current provision of HE produces suitable graduates for the workplace

  • In addition many students, young or mature, accessing HE courses with a NVQ level 3 qualification (craft trades for example) struggle to cope with the rigors of a HE syllabus.

In order to improve this situation Greater Manchester Strategic Alliance is developing a catalogue of construction sector modules that can be delivered as standalone CPD units. These units may be combined to attain a recognised qualification at university level (University certificate, Diploma, Foundation Degree and Honours Degree level).

It is envisaged that this will enable employees and employers to pick and choose modules which are relevant to their training requirements. The benefits for employers are to have a workforce which is strategically trained to fully develop the business needs.
