J21 aids GM Procure improve the development and retention of professional staff

Improving the development and retention of professional staff

J21 has been to the aide of GM procure; a consortia of social housing providers with stock in the North West. GM Procure with Manchester Enterprises (the economic development agency for Greater Manchester) as well as several other regional and national agencies.

GM procure with the help of J21 hosted a seminar on 13th November 2008 for its clients to improve the development and retention of professional staff.

There is a growing pressure for developing construction professional staff to evidence competence to be able to meet requirements set on employers through initiatives such as the 2012 Construction Commitments and the Construction (Design and Management) CDM regulations 2007. Skills development to achieve chartered membership of the CIOB and the Managers CSCS card goes a long way to meet these requirements.

Over forty delegates attended to hear key note speakers from GM Procure (Hosted By Robert Lynch), Carillion and DLP Services give a personal view of the benefits of skills development for developing professionals. Delegates heard examples of the proven best practice applied by many chartered professionals to support developing professional staff to achieve CIOB membership and the Managers CSCS. The event aimed to ensure all developing professionals within the consortium have access to this level of support and encouragement.

Workshop sessions by Hilary Brown and Donal McNicol of the CIOB explained routes to membership, Chartered Building Company membership, and preparing for the Professional Review. Sessions by Jo Sutcliffe, Michael Evans, and Deborah Hilton of the CITB-ConstructionSkills described OSAT, grants, and the Construction Ambassador programme.

Having established the proven best practice of established chartered professionals and managers supporting developing professionals to achieve chartered membership and the Managers CSCS card, cohorts of between up to six developing professions under the guidance of maybe two or three chartered professionals are to be established.
